A Salty Speakers Mixtape

Playlist by Ryan Harrison

This week’s playlist comes from Ryan Harrison, Portsmouth-area musician of Rick Rude, Black Norse, and Shifty. Ryan, along with a handful of other music enthusiasts, started Salty Speakers to spotlight local and touring freak-folk, noise, punk and indie acts–basically the music they liked that often went neglected by the local media and venues. The project began as a Thursday-night show series in the comfy-couch bar, The Red Door. It’s grown to become a promotional powerhouse for the seacoast area, spotlighting shows, releasing records and reviewing local albums on its website.

The Salty Speakers Red Door shows unfortunately came to a quick end this Fall, leaving Ryan and the crew scrambling to relocate eight shows in October. Other venues stepped up to the plate, including the Brickhouse, and Spun Records in Dover NH, the Buoy Gallery in Kittery. Not one show was cancelled.

Salty Speakers is the sort of scrappy do-it-all music collectives we love. They make things happen by pooling their efforts and talents, connecting people to support great bands. The playlist features lots of Ryan’s favorites from his scene! Flyers from some of Ryan’s favorite Salty Speakers shows below.
