The Dazies / Barrence Whitfield and the Savages / Eternals

“Idiot” – The Dazies

     One-Two-Three-Four-Five. Hey I’m alive.

Hometown heroes The Dazies put out a fresh EP last week and it’s awesome. “Idiot” sounds sort of like a teenage Bruce Springsteen in a two-door garage. The lyrics are optimistic in a “could be worse” kind of way when paired with the pump-up riff and rock and roll saxophone.

“The Claw” – Barrence Whitfield and the Savages

     Do the claw.

Guitar, sax, and bass fills would make the song if Barrence wasn’t already making the song. Barrence has a powerful soul singer’s howl and he deserves the rowdy, but tasteful, garage band behind him. Primo dance music.

“Out Of Context” – Eternals

Gotta keep it light. That’s an order.

Easily the most restrained and nuanced number on the site thus far.  Eternals are the most recent venture of Stephen Konrads, songwriter and synth expert.  His bandmembers can be heard on a number of songs from The Soul Shop Christmas album featured on last week’s Hot Singles. Lots of beautifully produced musical details here, particularly the woeful pedal steel. But the song is really made by the spaces the band leaves.
