Steve Marion is the rare guitar god who tours and generally exists in the biosphere of “indie rock,” a genre built at least partially on a disdain for mastering your instrument. Steve has mastered his instrument, and his pedal board. But he still writes pop songs. His guitar parts have the phrasing of vocal hooks, the vibrato of a human voice, and here on “Winners” a gooey tone that is as satisfying as it is bizarre. I hope it doesn’t ruin the song for you if I mention I hear a little lick of “Mrs. Robinson” in the lower melody. It makes it better for me.
See Steve live for his Byrne-esque dance moves and lanky swagger. And dig deep into his prolific discography via his bandcamp.
